The Much Awaited Treo 700 - Running on Windows Mobile 5.0!

Many has been said about the rumored PalmOne Treo running on Windows Mobile OS. After several months of confirming and denying reports, it was finally announced, non other by the head honchos of Palm and Microsoft.

I won't discuss this here in my blog, but you may want to browse the following websites like The Unwired, Pocket PC Thoughts or just simply google the topic.

Here are some of the pics (pictures taken from Pocket PC Thoughts and The Unwired)

Just One More...

Oh Yeah... I've been blogging these latest entries for the past couple of hours! I had a lot of catching up to do so I blogged those entries before I lose my excitement.

Just one more before I take some rest.

Remember what I've posted before about our old Globe Handyphone no. getting disconnected. Well, it's not, and it's here to stay! We were offered to keep our postpaid line for free for the next 2 years, provided that we stay within the old Advantage plan with the monthly fee of P458.00. Not bad! If we exceed the bill, then we need to pay the excess amount.

But there's a slight problem - who gets to use it? My dad doesn't need a second cellphone anymore though he used to own this number. Our office already has a new Globe Handyphone line replacing the old no. My mom, nor my brother doesn't need it either.

Guess who gets to keep it.

It's now my 2nd time after 2 years to use 2 postpaid lines, only this time I only have to pay for one not unless I exceed my free minutes and SMS on Globe.

iPAQ 2210 became an iPAQ 4350/6515

My iPAQ 2210 with the Micro Thumboard

During the Mobile Pilipinas event, I met with Tony Sta. Clara, fellow forumer in Pinoy Windows Mobile to buy his iPAQ Micro Thumboard. He originally tried to sell it for 2,300 pesos but I refused because my priority at that time was to buy a WiFi card. Then just last week, I was surprised to find that he was selling it at only 1,200 and still negotiable. Oh yes, I bought the thumboard for only 1,000 bucks!!!

It was biggest catch for the weekend and I've been using it a lot ever since. I use it for sending SMS via bluetooth especially when I'm driving. And now that I am able to make my GPRS connection work, I use my thumboard to chat with my friends using Yahoo and MSN Messenger on my iPAQ!

Now my only worry for the meantime is I hope I don't get to spend a lot for my GPRS usage.

Mobile Pilipinas

The 2nd Mobile Pilipinas event was held again at the Greenbelt Expo last September 16-18. The event was bigger, though I wouldn't say better but it was sure fun to be there to see the latest gadgets exhibited as well as meeting with other friends in the geekworld. I didn't expect to be there as an exhibitor, but when I came in, I found out that Pinoy Windows Mobile has a booth and Carlo Ma. Guerrero, President of PWM and former Editor-in-Chief of PC Magazine Philippines (he's now a Contributing Editor for both M|PH and PC Mag Phils.) was there alone manning it. Of course I had to volunteer, however there were no products to show off. Last year, we had the Smart Amazing Phone 2 for display and a lot of people flocked our booth to see it. We also had the Asus A620BT, the HP iPAQ 4350 on display as well. It's a good thing though I brought my Pocket PC along with its accessories for exhibition. Carlo was kind enough to lend me his HP iPAQ 6515 Mobile Messenger (which I gave a short review here in my blog), the Margi-Presenter-To-Go (though I didn't get to use it) and the Bluetooth keyboard (which I didn't get to use it either.)

Some of the items on display in our booth, most of the accessories are mine.

(Photos in this section were taken using the HP iPAQ 6515 Mobile Messenger's 1.3 Megapixel Camera)

This year, we are sharing the booth provided by Microsoft with Airfagev, which I used to be active in. Giveaways were given and I was able to get a keychain and a shirt that has the Windows Vista logo. Jackets were also given for a limited no. but I didn't get one anymore as I already have one.

But I got more back issues of M|PH for free! I stopped buying the magazine since last May so I missed 4 issues already. On the first day, they gave me 2 free issues of my choice so I chose the May and June issues. Then on the 2nd day, I received a free copy of the latest issue, which left the July issue missing. Off I went to the M|PH booth and bought their July issue for only 40 bucks, half the price of their usual selling price! I have just saved P280 bucks for all 4 issues!

picture of me, Microsoft MVP / Airfagev Wembaster Rey Vegafria and Cristeta at the booth. Yes, Rey and I are friends again

The Best background among all booths!

If you ask me, I like last year's Mobile Pilipinas more than this year. The venue looked bigger because the booths then were smaller. I feel there are lesser booths this year compared to last year. And though the weather was cool outside, inside it was hot, literally speaking. They turn off the airconditioning once in a while and we sometimes find ourselves sweating.

This event gave me an opportunity to meet with some of the famous people in the geekworld. I was finally able to meet Charo, aka rcdigun who is the President of MaPalad. I also had the chance to meet Jayvee Fernandez, one of the editors of M|PH. I was thinking of buying his "famous" iPAQ 4350 which was broken last year because he kept putting the fragile device inside his jeans pocket. And after not seeing him for almost 4 years, I was finally able to meet Adel Gabot, newly appointed Editor-in-Chief of M|PH. The first time I met Adel was when he had an EB with the mailing list of 103.5 K-Lite called Litemail. His radio name back then was Little David and was also the station manager of the said station. After he quit the radio business in March of 2002, he went back into writing and 2 years later became Editor-in-Chief of a men's lifestyle magazine called Manual. During that time, he was also appointed as part of the Editorial Group of M|PH replacing Jim Ayson. It was during the event that I found out that he had already replaced Jason de Villa as EIC so out of etiquette, he quit his post in Manual even if they are 2 different magazines.

Newly appointed M|PH Editor-in-Chief Adel Gabot

It was nice to talk to Adel again when I found him resting outside the Greenbelt Expo on Day 3. Surprising as it may seem, he brought up how K-Lite had changed. I took the advantage of telling him how I became disappointed with the program changes, and how I missed those times when they were still there. But at least Adel is doing well with the magazine and I feel that he rightfully deserves this position.

Also on Day 3 was the return appearance of Pinoy Windows Mobile Vice-President and my good friend, Norbert Aquende. It's nice to see Norbert active again and now that we're complete, we'll be able to help revive the group again.

Pinoy Windows Mobile's President and Vice-President: Microsoft MVP Carlo Ma. Guerrero and Norbert Aquende, Chairman of the Philippine Hentai Foundation

Nope, they're not watching Hentai movies! Norbert is showing Carlo a video of the Windows Vista's (formerly Longhorn) impressive  features

There were some old members who dropped to check out the booth and the iPAQ 6515. Other visitors inquired about the group or general questions of what a Pocket PC can do. I was supposed to be interviewed by a TV show reporter (I forgot the name of that show) but I was smart enough to refer him to Carlo instead, he he he! There was a nice lady doctor who patiently listened to my explanation on how a pocket pc can help her do her work, and there was a call center agent who annoyingly bragged that he was going to be promoted and needs my advice on which device I would recommend, with the matching "twang!" For all I know, he'll just be promoted as a floorwalker...

After 3 days, Mobile Pilipinas has finally ended with someone from a call center company winning the laptop as a grand prize. If there's one thing I would mention that would end this event in a happy note - it's about not losing or breaking any of my devices or that were on exhibit.

HP iPAQ 6515 Mobile Messenger

The HP iPAQ 6515 Mobile Messenger

I had the privelege of using this extraordinary device last weekend. I'm not really a fan of Pocket PC Phone Editions but this really changed my perception about them. It was stable enough as a mobile phone compared to the XDA II that I have used last year. Calls were clear and SMS were easy to enter thanks to the built-in thumboard. The size of the device wasn't as big as the XDA IIs or the HP iPAQ 6315s, nor as small as the XDA Mini. The issue surrounding this device is its 240 x 240 screen, which is very unusual for a Pocket PC. This is actually one of the biggest flaws  which is preventing me from getting this unit as I am very used to maximizing the usual 320 x 240 screen resolution. The consolation I get is that it's easy to put inside my pants pocket.

Aside from the usual Pocket PC features, it also has a built-in 1.3 megapixel camera. Before, I dismissed the cameras of the rx3000 series because they didn't impress me that much. The pictures I took disappointed me and appeared to be taken by a VGA camera. With the 6515's camera, it wasn't that bad after all and I took pictures whenever I had the chance, whether indoors or outdoors. Videos were quite good as well. The camera also had a small flash but that could only be helpful for close shots. Samples of these shots can be found in my "Mobile Pilipinas" entry found above.

Another major feature of the iPAQ 6515 is its GPS feature. Imagine this: you get a call from your boss and gave you orders to drop by his friend's office to get some documents. Using your bluetooth headset, you had the freedom to jot down your boss's orders on your 6515 then open its GPS application and find the address in its map. Cool huh? The maps were provided by Find Me, and compared to the maps that were included in the Mitac Mio 168 Pocket PC (the other Pocket PC with built-in GPS) this one was already updated. It now has icons to let you know where the gas stations are, the nearest hospital, schools, etc. On a side note, I think Find Me took some of our suggestions seriously when we beta-tested their maps on the smartphone versions.

I almost fell in love with the device even if I only used it for 2 and a half days. But unfortunately the battery life is not powerful enough to last at least 2 days. Using the GPS, camera features, making and receiving calls and SMS drained the battery before the day ended. Quite disappointing if you ask me. Even more disappointing is its processor speed, less than 400 MHz usually found on a Pocket PC Phone these days. Plus the screen resolution is quite bothersome as some applications wouldn't work with its smaller size.

If it only had a bigger screen, a faster processor and a more powerful battery, then I just might jump into the convergence bandwagon with the HP iPAQ 6515. But even if I was gifted with this device, I'd rather use it only as a phone and GPS device, then use my other Pocket PC to do all the other dirty work.

z600 or t630?

originally, i wanted to have a z600 because it's a clamshell phone, and i love clamshell phones a lot. due to its high price, i decided that I'll get a cheaper t630 instead. i was told by a friend who's a die-hard SE user that both models have good VGA cameras but he prefers the t630 because he likes the design more.

but i've been seeing cheaper z600 units for the past days & my urge of getting a clamshell phone is greater. if there are problems with the hinges, it can be repaired immediately by Semicon for around 700 bucks!

i already have a prospect & i hope i'll be the one to buy it.

Numbers

Globe doesn't want to retain the old mobile nos. of subscribers who availed of their new promos. That kinda sucks if you ask me. My brother who's been a Globe subscriber since '99 was forced to change his no. of 6 years. What choice does he have, especially if a Nokia 6630 is offered to him for a low monthly fee. Our office mobile no. (which used to be my dad's) which has been existing for more than 4 years and a half will be changed in a few days. Don't we just hate it when we change nos.? Most people don't like it because they have to inform everyone about their new no. I have a different take on that. Being a sentimental person, I loved using that no. It makes you feel that you are one of the "oldies" of Globe. New mobile nos. nowadays start with 0917885**** or something like that, unlike the 0917831**** that we have. When I was still with Globe, I started out with 0917540****(which I hate) and changed it to 0917833**** that is similar to my house no. When I had a new Globe account 2 years ago (and don't ask what happened to it) I requested it to start with 0917831**** again. You may notice I have a thing with numbers. I actually do. You should have seen me years ago whenever I decide which number to choose.

I like the number I got from Smart. I requested the sales agent who got me a Smart Amazing Phone two years ago not to give me a number that starts with 0920 and strongly insisted to give me one that starts with 0918. Why? Again, it makes me feel that I am one of the "oldies" who uses the 0918 and not the 0920. Besides, it makes me cringe when I see the latter. I hope Smart, if they would grant me an extension of my contract to get a new phone, would retain my existing no. unlike what Globe is practicing. I'll find out by next week when we get a new phone for my mom, her contract is about to expire this month and we'll know by then if her no. will be changed or not.

It's been nice using your no., 0917831****. I hope to get your no. if I get a Globe Handyphone again. That is, if I decide to get their bad services again.
